No console FPS falls under the competitive quake niche imo. Halo has way too much handicap happening to compensate for aiming with a controller to really gain that sort of respect from me (even if tweaking and abusing the handicap is part of the skill needed). Keep in mind I am also a tad harsher about my opinions on this shit. ;P
As for Halo 3 lacking, I think that is obvious. It didn't have to do anything, however, but be Halo. The end. Millions sold. Co-op is still a fucking blast (sorry Wiz...I'll find time to hop on some day...lol) and part of the unintentional humor during that mode is from laughing at some of the half-assed elements. The fact that every encounter is trying to be sold to me as some "epic scale broughaha" and that Master Chief is essentially the ultimate weapon of mass destruction that has to do everything for the human race, from opening doors for marines to wiping out an alien race, has me rofl'ing the entire time.
Oh yeah. COD4. I spent my cash on Virtua Fighter 5. Sorry.
