You can file the entire unreal brand under the "wtf were they thinking in numbering sequels" category. Though, I guess in a way, it made some sort of sense. UT was never meant to have any type of story. UT was playing bots in a tournament ladder. Unreal was the one with a story, and that has always sucked. then they released new versions of unreal tournament in order to try to make a better FPS multiplayer game to go up against Quake 1/2/3 which at the time dominated the high money gaming tournaments out there. That would mean UT, UT2003, UT2004, and soon to be UT3. Iirc, UT2003/2004 used the same unreal 2 engine, and people who bought 2003 were able to get 2004 at a discount. Of course, it never gained any ground as the Quake series was still the preferred multiplayer FPS of choice, and newcomers such as Halo, counter-strike, and battlefield were propping up.

Of course, in an effort to show that they didn't forget about single player, they made Unreal 2, which was utter crap imo.
Then there were the console spinoffs, aptly named Unreal Championship 1 and 2, which you can probably say is the exact same bullshit as 2003 and 2004 were, with perhaps a vehicle here or there to make it more like Halo to try to tap into that market. Failed.
Finally, I guess they realized they don't have much of a creative department, but have a pretty good engine that we all know now as Unreal Engine 3, which powers games like Bioshock, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Gears. And with that engine, version 3, is where UT3 gets the number 3. (at least that's what I would figure)
Anyway, with the lack of dueling type FPSes (everything is becoming more team-squad based) lately, they might actually have a FPS, in UT3, for the professional gaming circuit this time around that'll last longer than its predecessors. Maybe.
