"Jay Levy says he has been stung by Apple's iPhone pact with AT&T after he took an iPhone on a Mediterranean cruise. They didn't use their phones, but when they got back they had a 54-page monthly bill of nearly $4,800 from AT&T Wireless. The problem was that their three iPhones were racking up a bill for data charges using foreign phone charges. The iPhone regularly updates e-mail, even while it's off, so that all the messages will be available when the user turns it on."

from what i read, iPhone does NOT transmit data when turned off.  its most likely they put the phone on "sleep" and not necesarily off.

also there's a setting to NOT auto-check for emails.. wouldn't you want to set this to OFF if you knew you were going overseas w/ your iPhone?

you are correct on both counts. there is turning the phone "OFF" and the sleep/screen dark  mode

yeah, i have mine set to "manual" for checking email. i just didn't want it draining battery by constantly checking for emails..

would be interesting to know what the factory defaults are...
