JJ Abrams - Cloverfield

[ Edited ]
Some people got to see this trailer before Transformers, I was one of the unlucky few who did not. Basically, some large godzilla like creature has attacked New York City, the film is shot entirely from the handi-cam perspective. Looks neat and exciting.

high def trailer.  i'm a big jj abrams' fan so i'm definitely interested.

some stuff from wikipedia:

"Based on the sites, the film was speculated to be about Cthulhu, due to the puzzles possessing Lovecraftian themes.[4] Other reported speculation included a Voltron film adaptation, a new Godzilla film or a Lost TV spin-off. "

Will we ever find out what it is, or is it going to be totally stupid, like Lost?

Re: JJ Abrams unnamed Project

So anyone have bets on Cloverfield? Will it suck or will it be cool?

My money's on suck right now, though I'm curious enough to go watch it this weekend.

The hype is too big to suck and it would be a big disappointment if it does. If it does suck, there will be even less incentive to pay 10 dollars for a movie going forward.

Let's not get too carried away on the impact the success or failure of this movie will have on the industry. Yea there's hype about it, but here are the facts:
1) they are releasing the movie in January, not summer time
2) Relying more on viral marketing techniques than traditional methods
3) Budget was 30 million on movie
4) Buncha no-name actors and stuff
There have been way bigger name movies that flopped, that had way more push/hype/budget/star power. People still go to the movies.
This feels more like an experiment on the part of the studio, one I hope that pans out so that more creative projects get greenlit. But I'm not overly optimistic.

all of those are true, and i will offer s gre assertions.

winter movies are generally "better" made, (imo) due to summer blockbusters overly relying on shit blowing up and/or just a big name to impress people, as opposed to plot/story/characters/personal relevance and one's own "connection" to what you're seeingon screen.  see 5 of the last 7 oscar winners and their release dates: the departed October 6, 2006, million dollar baby December 15, 2004, lotr: rotk December 17, 2003, chicago January 24, 2003, a beautiful mind December 21, 2001.

a lot of movies have taken the viral marketing approach these days.  there's all kinds of crap out there on the next batman movie.  of course nobody really knows yet whether or not this method is effective, but given this new age of media we're on the cusp of, who knows what all these young people are thinking.  this might be the next great marketing technique, or it might just be money down the drain. (i personally can't stand the fact there are all these bloggers out there who are presenting their opinions as fact and that people are getting their news from comedians, but i digress)

a $30 million budget pretty much guarantees it's going to make money, so as far as the suits (the people who greenlight these ideas) are concerned, no problems there.  the movie, however, IS competing with 27 Dresses, and given Katherine Heigl's rise to the top lately, who knows what the box office count will be.

of course, before the trailer and hints about the plot were released, i was already interested due to who was producing (the guy behind lost, alias, m:i iii, and the upcoming star trek movie)

what does all of this mean? probably nothing.  there aren't too many new topics around here for me to contribute.

Hasn't Harry Potter also generally been a Winter movie?  LOTR is a good example of a Winter movie as well..but those are pre holiday movies...

HP and LOTR are major, can't-miss franchises so the release time frame on those isn't as telling as it might be on something that's new, as far as studio-confidence.

Re: JJ Abrams unnamed Project

what ever happened to:
"Hey, that looks interesting..." then going to see a movie w/ zero expectations?

you're only setting yourself w/ hugemo disappointments if you go w/ the hype and/or high expectations.

if you go w/o any expectations, and, even if the movie suck, you won't suffer hugemodisappointmentitus...

When tickets were 5 bux, sure. 10 dollars is like almost a month of WoW!

that's a reason why i just wait for the movie to come out on a disc. i pay like 4 bux more than a movie ticket, watch it whenever i want and share it as well also. plus, I'll own it. In the past half year when I decided that going to movies didn't make any sense, I've only gone to the movie theater for big blockbusters and if several friends want to go out for a movie. besides that, i'll usually stay away.
