For you EDGE haters, this is an interesting prediction from a columnist I like to follow on PBS:

if its just a firmware update then awesome, new phone to play with. if they're releasing new hardware so soon and screwing the early adopters then this will be the first (i own nothing apple previous to this thing) and last apple product i buy.

If I were a betting man, I'd place it on the change being a firmware upgrade. I'll bet the hardware is in there and they just software gimped it. As the article mentioned, it would be a great "New and Improved!" feature to showcase around November for the holiday season.

that's what apple did for the core 2 duo line of computers and 802.11n networking. they had the hardware in place but gimped it since they 802.11n was close to ... what's the term... certfication? and one can enable it with a firmware update. yeah it cost 25 bucks (or free if you get the n router) but that had more to do wth california law than anything.

i hope so. samething happened with the original digital rebel and 10d. the rebel was capable of everythign the 10d was they just gimped the software portion of it...people just released a hacked firmware update for the rebel that unlocked all the features. also would be cheaper to manufacturer 1 set of hardware vs a gimped one and a full featured one.
