Ligers are obviously very real.  They are also incredibly massive due to hybrid vigor.  They get huuuuuuuuge.  I've stood next to a large tiger before and that was really imposing.  Ligers/Tigons can get upwards of 8 feet tall when they stand on two legs.

Re: Lion + Tiger = Liger... and a fine.

Problem is hybrid males are usually sterile depending on how many chromosomes each parental cat has.  My Savannah Cat is a mix of domestic cat and African Serval.  Males are sterile until they get to about 6.255% serval then the chromosome numbers match up again.  Mine is 25% serval.  So unfortunately making a new species isn't very viable.  On top of that, natural instincts tend to conflict.

My cat, despite being a hybrid of African Serval, his domestic side is part Bengal cat which itself is a hybrid of Asian Leopard Cat (not a Leopard, just looks like a small one but IS a wild cat), and a variety of domestic short hairs. So you have domestic traits, Asian Leopard Cat traits, and Serval traits. Many of those instincts contradict each other and lead to interesting and new behaviors.  For example, my cat can't meow but he loves water.

Hybridization of animals is a tricky thing and rarely ever works out the way it was planned.
