Anyone know how google searches or searchs in general determine what page your website lands on? Is it the more popular the website the closer to the front you are or do you have to contact google to determine where you land?

it's algorithmically driven. people have figured out the algorithm (primary factors in determining ranking) in the past, but google is known to constantly tweak the ranking algorithm. (this is called the "google dance"). one of the main determinants of ranking is how many sites link to your site.
There is a whole friggin industry spawned around this called SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It's pretty crazy. Doing a few searches should give you some hints that you can use to improve your ranking or you can pay a pro to do it.
