Hours after its iPhone 4 went on sale to excited crowds Thursday, Apple found itself responding to complaints that holding the phone by its metal edge causes mobile reception to suffer.
"Just avoid holding it in that way," Apple CEO Steve Jobs wrote in ane-mail
FU Steve Jobs and apple. How about design a better phone?

Meh, lower left corner? Just cut off your right pinky if you hold the phone right handed.
I read somewhere that with the 3G disguise they gave the prototype lost in the Hofbrau they probably would not have caught this flaw (if it's true). Perhaps they should have routed that weak point to the top of the phone where people are less likely to touch it during a phone call.

think slapping one of those form fitting cases around the phone should solve the issue. guessing your hands are completing some sorta circuit thats causing interference possibly? another couple months or so and i'll grab one me thinks.

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

So...what's the problem with this leaked guideline? This kind of thing is SOP for any major customer service operation so that every customer gets equal treatment, the CS reps are aware of the answers they should give to specific problems, and that there's a unified message given to the public on a given issue.
It may not be the answer you want (give me a free: phone, month of service, pacifier, etc.), but it's very important that a consistent, unified message be put across in cases where tens of thousands or more people can be affected by a similar issue.
The other thing to remember is that there's an order of magnitude more iphones sold than any other phone model. It's not that other phones don't have retarded QC issues (see: Evo screen peeling off, battery life issues, screen responsiveness issues), it's just that there's 10x as many people bitching and moaning about the iphone problems.
You see this in games too, let's use balance as an example. There is no question that games like Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, CnC, etc are way more imbalanced than Blizzard RTS. It's just that no one plays those other games competitively so no one gives a shit. Then on the other hand, there's a million people complaining that roach's hp is 5% too high, as opposed to a shit game like CnC where you just spam tank 4tw. More eyeballs on your product, the closer it is to being awesome, the more the little things stand out.
But yea getting dropped call for holding the phone a certain way is retarded -- I'd still rather know where not to hold the phone as opposed to it being a mystery (like when my 3GS drops -- now I know not to cover the right!)

lol, apple, gm, msoft, whoever. big business is big business and all they care about is their own livlihood. not blaming them or anything. if i were in their position i'd have no issue squishing the little guys face as long as it makes me more money. just saying it is what it is.
