So i need to buy comps for work.  now should i go vista or xp?   right now price is the major issue I have.  Im looking for the best bang for the buck here.  The slowest cpu I can find that'll still run vista well and I'm also worried about compatibility problems with the older programs I'm running.  With xp I can buy cheaper comps and I know it'll run everything I have plus everythign for the next 5 years.  suggestions on cpu, vc and ram to run vista decently?

If it's for work, from an IT perspective, sticking with Windows XP for now is probably the better choice until all the kinks are worked out with Vista.

demnit most dell stuff comes with vista only.  their business machines can be loaded with xp but they end up costing twice as much...retarded...processor upgrade is 50 bux on the home machine and like 120 for the business machine...same freaking processor....

have you considered looking into a machine from compusa?  the one in anaheim is closing and currently having a discount.  if you get a HP or something, it would still get support from HP, i think.

yes i should get shot for mentioning, but Frys also have deals on desktops.. for around $500.  since it's for work, i don't see a problem w/ getting a low-mid-end machine, esp if it's cheap to get one premade.

configured a dell for about 600 bux w/o a monitor (dont' need since i already have).  x2 3800, 1 gig of ram and 250 meg hd with vista home premium.  I think thats more than enough for my needs.

I believe Dell has N series computers that comes without OS installed.  The price of the computer is controlled by Microsoft, they issue license to sell the OS with higher price for XP and cheaper for Vista, that's why it's more expensive for XP systems.

Right now I am running Vista on XPS M1710, so far the issues I have are...

Winrar doesn't work right, but 7-zip works without a problem

Nero is going kind of crazy trying take control of things at the same time Windows does, I deleted it.  Using the burning program that came with Windows.  Roxio that came in Dell doesn't work quite right either.

One of the Windows Patch doesn't want to install, giving me 8000FFFF error, which I did a research, it could be anything... so I don't bother with it

Other than that, I am still trying to get used to Vista.  I did came up with the thought of installing XP instead, but I want to get used to Vista.  I like the idea of keeping up with technology. 

I purchased the laptop from a guy on Ebay, pretty good service.  Got the laptop for $4400, which would cost $6000+ on Dell website, maybe he can get you what you wanted for cheaper as well.  Let me know if you want his contact.
